in vitro studies
In vitro studies are done to assess the efficacy of test drugs against various micro organisms, gram positive and gram negative bacteria as per standard operating procedures. This method is the initial method used for screening large number of test compounds for their anti microbial property using MIC values
in vivo studies
in vivo studies are done to assess the efficacy of ‘potential’ anti microbial test compounds whose MIC values at in vitro study are encouraging. These are usually done in immunocompromised or normal animal models infected with target microorganism. There can be systemic infection model, topical infection model to screen various test compounds for various therapeutic applications.
Anti bacterial and anti fungal property of various test compounds have been screened in past using validated in vitro and in vivo models.
